We are going to be beginning a five-part series on the
book of Jonah.
Do you really know the story of Jonah? A lot of people
think so. It’s the story of a guy who
doesn’t do what God wants him to do. God puts him
in the belly of a big whale. He lights a candle. The
whale throws him up on shore, and he gets to be a real
boy for the rest of his life. Oops! Wrong story!
That’s Pinocchio.
The Book of Jonah contains a story that a lot of people
consider to be a kid story that you hear only about in
Sunday school. The truth is though, that the story of
Jonah really speaks into all of our lives if we listen
to the Spirit of God. There is a little bit of Jonah in
all of us.
In fact, we are Jonah …
-
when God speaks, and we run in the opposite
direction;
-
when we smile big, but we’re decaying
inside;
-
when we choose to cover our sins rather than confess
them;
-
when we, the forgiven, fail to forgive;
-
when we seek the fleeting pleasures of this world
over the eternal joy of God;
-
when all we have is a distant memory of
Christ.
